Elizabeth

I’d like to introduce you to a friend of mine. Some of you might remember her. Her name is Elizabeth. She is a fictional character who is gestating in my imagination. I think about her often and imagine up all sorts of wonderful scripts for her but when I finally have a moment to sit down at the keyboard, she’s already given up on me and gone to bed.

And so I’ve made a promise to Elizabeth to give her more attention, even if it’s just here and there for now. I even made a new page just for her. A close friend or an astute reader may notice similarities between Elizabeth and me. However, it’s important to remember that Elizabeth is not me and I am not Elizabeth.

Elizabeth will randomly visit this blog randomly. So without further ado, in no particular order, I’ll pick out the first thing I wrote about Elizabeth back when I only had 2 children and sleeping in was still a choice.

With sleepy thoughts of a little girl with red pigtails, ready to begin her new life in her Green Gables home, Elizabeth gave in to her tired eyes and set her book down on the bedside table. Forcing herself out of the cozy blankets, she crossed the room and flipped off the light. She hesitated for a moment by her bed with her finger on the alarm clock switch. Though she longed for a day to sleep in, she knew the heater guy would be there bright and early to drag her out of her dreams. Before allowing for a counter-argument she switched the alarm on and then sank into the comfort of her bed she had been longing for all day.

Stretching out across the queen-sized bed, she said a silent quick prayer for her husband, who was in the room across the hall suffering another long night of after-hours work, that he would be able to enjoy the same luxury of sleep soon. She felt she had hardly closed her eyes when the dreadful sound of her alarm barged into her dreams. Forcing herself out of her sleep and into semi-consciousness, Elizabeth expertly removed herself out of the husband-mommy-baby sandwich she had become sometime during the night and then stumbled to the clock. Swatting away at any practical or sane thoughts buzzing at her through the blare of the alarm, she switched the alarm off, snuck back under the blankets and fell back asleep…
